What it is
Home Generator Installation and Hookups in Charleston
Hurricane season and summer storms are part of life in Charleston, and so are power outages. A generator installed the right way keeps your refrigerator, lights, well pump, medical equipment or air conditioning running when the grid is down.
The key word is safely. A generator has to be connected through a transfer switch or an interlocked inlet so it can never send power back onto the utility lines, which can injure line workers and damage your equipment. Plugging a generator into an outlet with a homemade cord is never safe.
We install permanent standby generator electrical connections and automatic transfer switches, and we set up portable generator inlets with a manual transfer switch or panel interlock. Generator work requires a permit, and gas-fired units also need a licensed gas contractor for the fuel line.
Signs
Signs It's Time for a Generator
A generator is worth a look if:
- You lost power for days after a past storm
- Someone in the home relies on medical equipment
- You work from home and can't afford downtime
- You've been running extension cords from a portable generator
- You want to protect a freezer, sump pump or well pump
- You're upgrading your panel and want to be generator-ready
Options
Generator Installation Options
We'll help you choose the setup that fits your home and budget:
Standby Generator Hookup
A permanently installed generator on a pad that starts on its own during an outage, connected through an automatic transfer switch.
Best for: Whole-home or critical-load backup with no hands-on setup
Automatic Transfer Switches
The switch that senses an outage, disconnects the utility and transfers your circuits to the generator, then switches back when power returns.
Best for: Standby generator systems
Portable Generator Inlet and Interlock
An outdoor inlet box and a panel interlock or manual transfer switch so you can safely run selected circuits from a portable generator.
Best for: Budget-friendly storm backup
Generator-Ready Panel Prep
Setting up your panel and circuits now so a generator can be added later with minimal work.
Best for: Panel upgrades and new construction

Test & Walkthrough
STEP 6
Everything is tested, inspected where required and shown to you.
We start by talking through what you want to power during an outage and looking at your panel and the best location for the generator or inlet. The quote covers the electrical scope and permit. If a gas line is needed, it's handled by a licensed gas contractor.
Timing
How Long It Takes
A portable generator inlet with an interlock is typically installed in a day or less. Standby generator installations take longer and depend on the pad, fuel connection, permit timing and inspection.
Demand rises before and during hurricane season, so planning ahead gives you the most scheduling flexibility.
Pricing
How Much Does Generator Installation Cost?
Generator electrical work is quoted per job. What affects the price:
- Portable inlet setup vs. standby generator
- Which circuits you want backed up (essentials vs. whole home)
- Transfer switch type and size
- Distance from the panel to the generator or inlet
- Panel condition and capacity
- Permits, inspections and fuel line work by others
Call us to talk through your outage plan. We'll recommend a setup and give you a written quote for the electrical work.
Local know-how
Generator Installation for Lowcountry Storms
Hurricanes, tropical storms and summer thunderstorms bring outages to every part of the Charleston area, from the islands to Summerville and Goose Creek. Homes near the water also have flood elevation to think about when choosing where a generator sits.
Local building departments require permits for generator installations. In the City of Charleston, for example, the electrical connection is permitted separately from the generator pad, and gas work requires a licensed gas contractor.

Care and Maintenance
Standby generators should be exercised and serviced according to the manufacturer's schedule. Keep the area around the unit clear of plants and debris.
Run portable generators only outdoors, well away from doors and windows, and never in a garage. Test your inlet setup before storm season so you know the steps.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I plug my generator into a wall outlet?
No. That's called backfeeding and it's dangerous to you and to utility workers. A transfer switch or interlocked inlet is the safe way to connect.
What's the difference between a standby and portable setup?
A standby generator is permanently installed and starts on its own. A portable setup uses an inlet and manual switch so you can connect your portable generator safely.
Do I need a permit for a generator?
Yes. Generator electrical connections require a permit and inspection. We take care of the electrical permit.
Do you install the gas line?
Gas piping is handled by a licensed gas contractor. We'll coordinate the electrical side around it.
Can you prepare my panel for a generator later?
Yes. If you're upgrading your panel or building new, we can set things up so adding a generator later is simple.
