What it is
Breaker Panel and Service Upgrades in Charleston
Your electrical panel is where power enters your home and gets divided into circuits. When it's old, full or undersized, everything downstream suffers: breakers trip, there's no room for new circuits, and in some cases the panel itself becomes a hazard.
A panel upgrade can mean replacing an outdated panel with a new one, increasing the size of your electrical service, or adding a subpanel for a garage, workshop or addition. Larger upgrades are coordinated with your utility and require a permit and inspection, which we handle.
We upgrade panels for homeowners adding major appliances, remodeling, installing EV chargers or generators, or simply replacing equipment that's reached the end of its life.
Signs
Signs You Need a Panel Upgrade
Have your panel looked at if you notice:
- Breakers that trip often or won't stay reset
- No open spaces left for new circuits
- Warm, buzzing or discolored breakers or panel cover
- An older panel or fuse box that's never been replaced
- Plans to add an EV charger, generator, hot tub or major appliance
- A home inspector flagged the panel during a sale
Options
Types of Panel Upgrades
The right upgrade depends on how much power you need now and later:
Panel Replacement
Replacing an old, damaged or obsolete panel with a new one of the same service size, with circuits cleaned up and properly labeled.
Best for: Aging or recalled panels
Service Upgrade
Increasing the amperage of your electrical service (for example to 200 amps) to support more circuits and larger loads, coordinated with your utility.
Best for: Homes adding major loads or living space
Subpanel Installation
A secondary panel fed from the main panel to serve a garage, workshop, addition or outbuilding.
Best for: Detached garages, shops and additions
Fuse Box Replacement
Replacing old screw-in fuse panels with a modern breaker panel.
Best for: Older homes still on fuses

Your Quote

Clean, code-compliant work with your home or site respected.
Test & Walkthrough
STEP 6
Everything is tested, inspected where required and shown to you.
We start with a look at your existing panel, service and loads, and talk through what you want to add. Your quote spells out the panel, any service changes and utility coordination. On install day, power is off while we make the change, and we restore it as soon as the work is done and ready for inspection.
Timing
How Long It Takes
A straightforward panel replacement is often completed in a single day, with power off for part of that day. Service upgrades depend on utility scheduling for disconnect and reconnect, which can add time before and after the work itself.
We'll tell you up front how long you'll be without power so you can plan around it.
Pricing
How Much Does a Panel Upgrade Cost?
Panel upgrades are quoted after we look at your equipment. What affects the price:
- Replacement only vs. increasing service size
- Panel size and brand, and number of circuits
- Condition of the meter base and service entrance
- Whether circuits need to be extended or corrected
- Utility coordination requirements
- Permit and inspection fees
Call us to schedule a look at your panel. We'll explain your options and give you a written quote.
Local know-how
Panel Upgrades in the Charleston Area
Many homes in established Charleston neighborhoods, like the mid-century ranches of West Ashley and the 1940s and 1950s homes around Park Circle, still have original or aging electrical equipment. Those homes are often due for a panel upgrade, especially when the owners renovate.
In coastal areas, salt air can corrode exterior meter bases and service equipment over time. We check the outside equipment as part of any panel job.

Care and Maintenance
Keep the area in front of your panel clear so it can be reached quickly. Don't store items against it or block the door.
Test GFCI and AFCI breakers periodically with their test buttons. If a breaker feels hot, smells burnt or trips repeatedly, call us. Don't keep resetting it.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my panel needs to be upgraded?
Frequent tripping, no room for new breakers, heat or buzzing, or an older panel are common signs. We can inspect it and tell you whether a repair, replacement or service upgrade makes sense.
Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade?
Yes. Panel replacements and service upgrades require an electrical permit and inspection. We take care of both.
Will my power be off during the upgrade?
For part of the day, yes. We'll tell you the expected outage time before we start.
Do I need a bigger panel for an EV charger?
Not always. It depends on your current service and loads. We'll do a load check and tell you what's needed.
Can you add a subpanel for my garage or workshop?
Yes. Subpanels are a great way to add circuits in a garage, shop or addition.
