What it is
LED Recessed Lighting Installation for Charleston Homes
Recessed lighting (also called can lights or pot lights) sits flush in the ceiling, giving a room clean, even light without hanging fixtures. Today's LED recessed lights are slim, efficient and dimmable, and many fit into tight spaces where older cans never could.
Good recessed lighting is all about layout. Lights spaced too far apart leave dark patches; lights in the wrong place cast shadows on counters or glare on TVs. We plan the spacing for your room, ceiling height and how the space is used, then install the lights on a dimmer so you can set the mood.
We install recessed lighting in new construction, during renovations, and as a retrofit in finished ceilings, in kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms and covered porches.
Signs
Signs a Room Needs Recessed Lighting
Recessed lighting is a good fit when:
- One ceiling fixture leaves the corners of the room dark
- You want a clean, modern ceiling without bulky fixtures
- Low ceilings make hanging fixtures feel cramped
- You're remodeling and the ceiling is already open
- You want light you can dim for movies or dinner
- Old recessed cans are yellowing, buzzing or burning out
Options
Types of Recessed Lighting
We'll recommend the right type for your ceiling and the look you want:
Slim LED Wafer Lights
Ultra-thin LED fixtures that need very little ceiling depth, which makes them ideal for retrofits in finished ceilings and tight spaces.
Best for: Existing homes and low-clearance ceilings
New-Construction Recessed Housings
Housings installed before drywall, with LED trims added at the end, giving flexibility in trim style and size.
Best for: New builds and remodels with open ceilings
Gimbal and Adjustable Lights
Recessed lights that tilt and aim, to highlight artwork, fireplaces, shelves or sloped ceilings.
Best for: Accent lighting and vaulted ceilings
Wet-Rated Recessed Lights
Fixtures rated for showers and covered outdoor areas, built to handle moisture.
Best for: Showers, porches and soffits

Timing
How Long It Takes
Adding recessed lights to a typical finished room is usually a one- to two-day job, depending on the number of lights, attic access and whether a new switch or circuit is needed. Whole-floor projects take longer.
In new construction or a remodel, housings go in at rough-in and trims go on at trim-out.
Pricing
How Much Does Recessed Lighting Cost?
Recessed lighting is quoted per project. What affects the price:
- Number of lights and rooms
- Finished ceiling retrofit vs. open framing
- Attic access, ceiling height and joist layout
- Fixture style (wafer, housing and trim, gimbal, wet-rated)
- New switches, dimmers or circuits
- Drywall patching around old fixture locations
Tell us which rooms you'd like to light and we'll put together a layout and a written quote.
Local know-how
Recessed Lighting in Charleston-Area Homes
Many single-story homes in the area, from the ranches of West Ashley to the newer homes in Summerville and Goose Creek, have attic access above the main rooms, which makes recessed lighting retrofits straightforward. Two-story homes and homes with spray-foam insulation may need a different approach on the first floor, and slim wafer lights are often the answer.
On coastal porches and under deep eaves, wet-rated fixtures hold up to Charleston's humidity much better than standard indoor lights.

Care and Maintenance
LED recessed lights rarely need attention. Dust the trims occasionally and keep insulation from being piled over fixtures that aren't rated for insulation contact.
If lights flicker on a dimmer, the dimmer may not be LED-compatible. Call us and we'll match the right one.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you install recessed lights in a finished ceiling?
Yes. With attic access or slim wafer-style LEDs, we can add recessed lighting to most finished ceilings with only small openings to patch.
How many recessed lights does a room need?
It depends on the room size, ceiling height and how the space is used. We plan the layout during the walkthrough rather than using a one-size rule.
Can recessed lights go in a bathroom or shower?
Yes, with fixtures rated for wet or damp locations, installed and protected as required by code.
Will recessed lights work with a dimmer?
Yes. We install dimmable LED fixtures and pair them with a compatible dimmer.
Can you replace my old recessed cans with LED?
Yes. We can retrofit existing cans with LED trims or replace them with new LED fixtures.
